Trends or Fashion in Jewelry

As I begin my new life after retirement, and perhaps even a little before that, I have started paying much more attention to trends and tendencies in the jewelry world.

I have been attending local markets to see what is being offered, browsing the websites of different jewelry brands and the advertisements I receive by email, and visiting a few stores featuring established designers. All of this has given me an opportunity to observe what is happening in the jewelry market today.

My assessment is that there is a broader move toward “accessible jewelry”; pieces that look elegant and fashionable, but are easier to wear and more affordable than traditional fine jewelry.

I have noticed that some recognizable jewelry brands and artisans are using gold or silver plating over materials such as stainless steel or brass. Many jewelry companies also manufacture internationally, with production taking place in countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, India, Mexico, and China.

I have also been reading about the growing popularity of stainless steel, particularly the 316L. Unlike sterling silver, this stainless steel does not develop the traditional silver tarnish and is much more resistant to water, sweat, and everyday wear. Gold-colored stainless-steel jewelry is often finished with a gold coating, and some other manufacturing techniques, that can make the finish considerably more durable than traditional plating.

So, it seems that consumers have become much more comfortable saying: “I want the look of gold, but I don’t need solid gold”, and I believe that is a very powerful market.

At Design by Mariel, I am ready to ride this wave, but in my own way. I will continue creating handmade, one-of-a-kind jewelry, inspired by the beauty of the sea, nature, stones, shells, glass, and the unexpected treasures I discover along the way.

My goal is to offer beautiful pieces that feel special and personal, while keeping them accessible and affordable.

Because jewelry doesn’t have to be expensive to be meaningful, and perhaps that is one of the most exciting trends of all.
